ABOUT THE ARTIST

Laura Spector began creating artwork in 1994 as a performance and video artist. Museum Anatomy, her internationally acclaimed project where she collaborates with museums around the world to find hidden, stolen, lost and destroyed paintings to use as inspiration for new artwork began in 1996. She works in performance, photography, body painting, oil painting and figurative sculpture cast directly from the human body. Spector is a Fellow of the New York Foundation for the Arts, an Individual Grant Recipient of the Houston Art Alliance, and an artist-in-residence at AtelierHaus Hilmsen (Germany). Her artwork has been exhibited internationally including Grand Rapids Art Museum for ArtPrize8, FotoFest2014 (Houston), Lawndale Center for the Art’s “Big Show” in 2017 and 2013, and MOP at RedLine Contemporary Art Center in (Denver) in 2017. “The Divide” at the Friedrich Danniell Museum in 2017 (Germany) In 2018, she exhibited Museum Anatomy: The German Works based on paintings stolen by Nazi’s during WW2. In 2004 and 2007, she was a finalist for the Sovereign Asian Art Award as one of the top artists working in Asia, while living in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Currently, she is teaching painting and drawing classes at the Susanne M. Glasscock School for Continuing Studies at Rice University, Art League Houston, private classes at her Houston studio, and metalpoint at the Watercolor Art Society - Houston.
