Interview with an art collector #3

Explain your process for collecting art.  I have received many artworks as gifts or exchanges. I only recently started buying art on layaway. I send $50 here, $100 there until the sale if finalized. I have also bought from Artsy a photography book and a small collage.

What was the first artwork you collected and why? I started collecting periodicals and magazines in my early twenties and also was a heavy reader and had quite a collection of books and first editions but most of my library was destroyed during my second marriage. The magazines survived because I had them stored in boxes. For example I have the first Vanity Fair when it went back to print in 1983 and inside is an excerpt of “100 Years of Solitude” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez whom I had not heard or read before until I saw it in the magazine. I also have a collection of Shirley Temple dolls still in the box. When I was expecting my first son, my mother brought me back from Europe a copy of a small painting (reproduction) of a madonna which I placed in his room. I really never collected artwork other than posters and albums. I have quite a few original Beatles records and such.

Which is your most cherished piece? My first recollection of art were some small figurines my grandmother had in frames in her kitchen made from wire and they were campesinos from the country we had left behind and I had no memory of that place other than what these little figures on the wall represented. They were African and had white shirts one of the figures was pushing an ox and the other bending down on a field. I don’t know whatever happened to those figurines. I remember seeing them in my grandmother’s kitchen right into the 1970s but then they were gone. I have some of her knickknacks including a ceramic gallo which has no monetary value.

When I was about five a textile piece made it’s way via New York to our living room in Miami. It shows up in several photographs taken of us at the time and that piece made its way to home to home as we moved. When my mother was sent to a facility to live, my sister gave it to me and it is hanging in my bedroom. That is my most cherish piece next to some drawings my mother made when taking a fashion design class in little Havana.

Do you buy multiple images from artists or try to just stay with one? If I love an artist’s work, I will buy more than one piece from them.

Do you have a budget in mind when buying art? I don’t have any budget for art because technically I can’t afford it.

Do you buy art because you think it is a good investment? I buy art because of love.

Who are some of artists are in your collection? Victoria Selbach, Steven Wright, Daniel Maidman, Jerome Lagarrigue, Jeffrey Bess, Pauline Aubey, Steven DaLuz.
