HOW TO GET 100,000 FOLLOWERS ON INSTAGRAM
I just started posting artwork on Instagram last month and with 30 pictures posted I have 300 followers. This gives me an effectiveness score of “10” (300/30). In marketing, we’d say that score is about “brand recognition” and/or “reach.” I just ran the Instagram data from 56 of my favorite artists through Excel analytics to see what works on Instagram. Among these 56 artists, the number of Instagram images posted ranged from 20 to 5179 (Gary Baseman.) The number of followers ranged from 428 to 710,000+ (Sheperd Fairey.) For any artist, you can divide the number of followers by the number of posts and get a score indicating how many followers were gained “per post.” A crude measure of success. The lowest score was “2” followers gained per post. The top 9 artists all gained +200 followers per post. The question: why? What makes a difference towards Instagram success? I’ll give you a synopsis. These factors all help you get a better Instagram score:
• any kind of fame, anyplace, ever
• your brand longevity & time in marketplace
• high quality "finished" work with substantial content
• gallery exposure
• teaching exposure
• interaction with Instagram users via messaging
• consistency of work, it all looks like a “brand.”
• focus on presenting the art/artist/method/lifestyle
• subject matter that can be enjoyed on a small screen
• targeted work that supports your brand & voice, not shot-gun
No shit, right? But here’s what you really want to know: If people really "like" your work, you still have to put up 450 pieces of art to get 100,000 followers. If your art is hard to understand, you may have to put up as many as 700 pictures to get 50,000 followers. If you already put up more and still have very few followers, you did not sell your brand correctly or put up too many photos of your cat sleeping on the laundry basket.
