The submission call for an exhibition at Jo Hay Open Studio and publication in PoetsArtists is open to all professional artists over the age of 18 years of age.
The theme of this exhibition is the Disco era which originated in the early 1970’s. This era began to emerge from America’s urban nightlife scene gaining notoriety in the discotheques and clubs predominately in New York City.
WHAT TO ENTER
Each artist may submit one painting of the figure, or figures which may be interpreted as a portrait as well. The work must have been completed on or after January 1, 2017. Artists are invited to interpret the concept of portraiture broadly.
Only traditional paint mediums are accepted (acrylic or oil). We are not accepting drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, video, performance, and digital or time-based media.
Paintings may be framed or unframed. Paintings should preferably be unglazed unless they are unvarnished. Varnished works must be dry without any toxic smell. The maximum size painting is 36 x 48 inches vertically. Minimum size is 16 x 18 inches, vertically or horizontally. The painting should not weigh more than 20 pounds. All works should be submitted inclusive of mounting hardware (D-rings, cleats, wiring, etc.). In the event that hardware is not included with a delivered submission, the work will be disqualified upon arrival.
The JO HAY OPEN STUDIO reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any artist it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the STUDIO 54 call, including its website. It also reserves the right to disqualify any artist who does not adhere to the entry guidelines
Artists who are chosen to exhibit and publication may not alter the artwork that they have entered in any way. Work accepted must be available for sale and may not be sold during the time-frame of the submission call and for 90 days after the show comes down.
All exhibiting artists will be required to sign a loan agreement for the duration of the exhibition. Artists will sign a consent form for the use of their name, image, and artwork in connection with the STUDIO 54 exhibition, publication, and all related marketing, publicity, public programs, and promotion for the exhibition.
DELIVERY OF ARTWORK
Delivery of artwork to the gallery is no later than July 9th, 2018. Artists are responsible for shipping costs or delivery to and from the gallery. Artwork must not be wider than 36 inches or taller than 48 inches.
All artists must make arrangements for their art to be picked up no later than September 15th, 2018 and must cover any costs for shipping to and from the exhibition. It is the artist sole responsibility to carry insurance for the work while in transit to and from the gallery in Provincetown, MA.
Unless otherwise invited by one of the curators, this call is open to long standing Patreon members who are at the $5 tier or higher and new members who are signing up specifically for this call at the $10 tier. Artists may opt out after the acceptances have been noted.
Prepare a folder with high resolution image which fit the theme for the exhibition. Include a spec sheet with the work's title, medium, size, year, contact information and include a CV. Title each image accordingly. See our guidelines on how to prepare a folder. Send your folder via dropbox by sharing the link of the location to firstname.lastname@example.org. We will only contact artists whose work is accepted to show.
All finalists will be notified of their acceptance on or before June 18th 2018. Entries that have not been selected will not receive a notification. If accepted, work must arrive no later than July 9th, 2018.
The STUDIO 54 exhibition will be on view at THE JO HAY OPEN STUDIO GALLERY located in Provincetown, MA. from Friday July 13th till Saturday July 22nd 2018. The opening reception will be on Friday July 13th from 7-10pm at the gallery located at 167 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA. All are welcome to attend.
ABOUT THE CURATORS
Carolyn Kramer, owner and Gallery Director of The Jo Hay Open Studio Gallery spent her professional career specializing in marketing, branding and talent management in New York City for over 25 years. She is presently a well-respected part of art gallery scene of Provincetown, MA for the past 12 years. Kramer is mostly known for her expertise in the field of model management. Having shaped and guided the careers of the fashion industry’s most successful super-models Kramer took that passion from fashion to art. She has represented international as well as American artists since 2006.
Didi Menendez is the publisher, curator, and editor-in-chief of PoetsArtists. She is one of the pioneers of online publishing. Originally born in Cuba a year after the Revolution, her family settled in Miami in 1962. She now lives in the Midwest and works from home.
